Rowena Jenna Chase
Face Claim: Cara Delevingne
————————————————
Age: 17, April 14
Gender: Female
Orientation: bisexual
Position: High school student for now.
Godly Inheritance: Demigod. Her parent is Hades.
Power(s): Communication with Spirits (primary)
Communicating with spirits and ghosts is as easy for Row as talking to anyone else. In fact, sometimes she mistakes them for living people and it causes a hell of an odd sight for passers-by. This particular ability is only her ears hearing their words.
Supernatural Awareness (primary)
Unlike her ability to communicate with spirits being audible, her supernatural awareness is a power that operates on visibility. She can see through magical glamours, as well as being able to see ghosts and other spirits.
Invisibility (secondary)
Row's invisibility is limited to hiding her presence from one being. To anyone else but that particular person, she is still visible like normal. It isn't invisibility so much as the ability to hide from someone. In addition, she doesn't have as good control over it since it isn't the sort of ability to come easily.
Limitations:
Communication with Spirits:
- No visibility with only this power, only audible.
- No controlling how many spirits say hi at once, which can make it difficult to get details and make it easy for her to be overwhelmed.
- the more ghosts try to talk to her for a longer length of time, the more tired she will be at the end of the experience
Supernatural Awareness:
- in the case of magical creatures with strong magic like centaurs, she can only see through glamour for about ten minutes at a time without becoming tired
- The closer she is to either the place the person died or their grave, the easier it is for her to see them and the longer she can see them for at a time. Those are both places the ghost is tied to.
- Anyone with just concealment as their power, she cannot see through their glamour at this time. With practice, perhaps she could. Even then though, it would be extremely difficult because their power level would be higher.
Invisibility:
- can only be invisible to one person at a time
- invisibility to that one person only lasts for about a half hour, progressively making her more tired the longer she keeps it up
- she can't switch seamlessly from not being seen by one person to not being seen by another person. There's always about a minute long pause where she can be seen by all parties.
Side-Effects:
- tiredness with prolonged power use
- headaches if too many ghosts talk to her for long at once: basically if you had a whole crowd chatting you up you'd get a headache too
- occasional nausea if she pushes herself too much
- overuse can lead to her being slower to think and react in situations
Height: 5'7"
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Greyish blue.
Physical Description: She has a tattoo on her hand of CJD. The C stands for her last name, Chase. The J is for her middle name Jenna. The D is in memoriam of her brother Daniel, who died in a car accident. She basically wears anything that seems right for the moment, whether that's a sweatshirt or a smart looking blazer. Or even a dress. She isn't quite the tomboy she used to be, although she still prefers jeans to stockings any day.
Personality: She expects others to be decent people or they don't receive the same courtesy from her. Respect is something that must be earned in her eyes. She can sometimes have a bit of an ego and believe herself amazing, but she just believes it to be a good amount of confidence. She loves her food, and has a good metabolism to match. Row isn't always a tomboy, but one pet-peeve she definitely has is if people call her Rowena. As far as people are concerned, she's Row or RJ. Hell, she got angry at me just for calling her Rowena in the app. Rowena, Rowena, Rowena....just 'cause I can say it.
Something that she doesn't often express is her need to feel loved. She doesn't want to be alone, but she doesn't necessarily want to admit that. Her mind is reluctant to say what her heart feels, and it can sometimes get in the way of her receiving that which she wishes she had. She fears the dark, an unusual fear for a child of Hades. That being said, it is a secret she guards closely. Unfortunately there will always be people who will see her weakness so we'll see how long her 'secret' lasts, shall we?
Five (or more) Likes:
- Cheese
- Chocolate
- Anything to do with potatoes, really. Chips, mashed potatoes, fries. They're all fantastic.
- A good fitting pair of jeans
- The colours blue and red both catch her fancy.
- pickles
Five (or more) Dislikes:
- stockings
- dishonesty
- carrots.
- narcissism. If she exhibits it a bit, it isn't a big deal. She hates to see it in other people though.
- anyone who believes her predictable
Secret(s): She's afraid of the dark, something that's ironic for a child of the King of the Underworld.
Parents: Veronica Michaels (nee Chase), Robert Carter
Siblings: Daniel Michaels (half-brother, deceased)
Worthy Mentions: Jack Michaels (step-dad)
Childhood: Rowena's mum always excused the fact she'd cheated on Row's dad with 'he was built like a Greek god.' Row wouldn't see the irony of that statement until later, but it meant that her parents had gone their separate ways. Row's mum remarried when Row was five. Until then, it had just been the two of them. Her mum had worked all day and Row had been in a daycare, then in school. She didn't see her mum as much until her mum remarried. Jack Michaels was good to them, but Row never did actually take his name. She liked the way her mum's last name rolled off the tongue. Rowena Jenna Chase.
They were a pretty happy family up until her teenage years. They had family outings and stuff like that. When Row was ten, her mother became pregnant again. She gave birth to a son, and she and Jack called him Daniel. Row immediately doted on her baby brother, trying to give him all the love she could. He was beautiful, and she was glad he was there.
Adolescence:
The day she turned thirteen she was able to have a birthday party and invite three of her best friends. They weren't too close but close enough to be friends, you know? Teenage girls can be brutal, and she knew that. In school, she was more careful than anything. She made friends just enough to shrug suspicion. Becoming a loner isn't your friend. See what I did there? Yeaaaaahhh. Other than a game of truth or dare that ended up with Rowan admitting she hadn't kissed a boy yet, it was a pretty uneventful day.
The next day, on the other hand, was kinda sucky. Her family got into a car accident on the way to the grocery store. She was at school waiting for them to pick her up. No-one came until an hour later. A police officer informed her of the accident. Turns out her parents were okay. Her little light of the world, Daniel, though? He was dead on impact. When they had the funeral, it was pretty sad. I mean Daniel was only three, but Row loved him to death....erm...bits...she loved him a lot. Once most of the people had left, IT struck. No actually I'm kidding nothing struck. What did happen was that Row heard a giggle and followed the sound.
She ended up in the underworld, a sight that was a little jarring for a thirteen year old. That being said, it was even more jarring when she saw where the giggle came from. At this point she just thought she'd stumbled over a subway station or something that was a secret from the world. When she saw her baby brother though, she had to re-evaluate. She kind of ran right back out into the graveyard that first time.
Of course it was no less terrifying considering she could see the spirits of the people who hadn't passed on completely yet. Ghosts in a graveyard are kinda common and she could see them all. And they started talking to her. And so appeared her powers of supernatural awareness and communication with spirits. She was picked up and brought to the school by the recruiters soon after.
A week before her seventeenth birthday, another power activated. She was then able to hide her presence from one being of her choice. It's still iffy whether it works properly or not. In fact when the power first activated, she didn't know how to use it at all and it was sort of terrifying. One advantage of being a child of Hades however, is that you can go to the Underworld. She did what she does when she's confused about something. Row went to talk to the dead. She was not the first demigod to have invisibility as a power, although it manifested differently in her. Still, she was able to pick up some vital tips.
Adulthood:
Sample: Row flipped her hair behind her shoulder and glared daggers at the waitstaff. They'd spilled coffee over her lap. According to the ghost sitting on one of the cafe umbrellas, it wasn't the first time they'd bungled such a simple task either. Row was generally a pretty forgiving person, but...well what were you supposed to do when you had an appointment in half an hour and you just had coffee spilled all over your white blouse? It was a hell of a troublesome situation. That's when she saw the clothing store across the street. Her eyes immediately softened and she spoke to the waitress who, at this point, looked totally harried and unsure of how to proceed.
"The blouse cost thirty bucks. Give me the thirty bucks and I'll be fine. I have to be at an appointment soon and I don't plan on going with a giant beige stain on my shirt." The waitress nodded and sighed, moving into the back of the cafe and taking her wallet from her purse. Row rushed across the street with the thirty dollars and quickly bought a beige blouse. Hey, the colour looked good on her and it was a far better option than white just in case lightning struck twice. Row briefly thought about how ironic that expression was when it was used by a child of Hades. Would be even better if used by a child of Zeus.
She hadn't had the thirty dollars on her, so it was a good thing the waitress hadn't argued. It wasn't like Row was wanting for money, but it wasn't something she could pull it out of thin air. That was the true trouble, she had to say.
