Things hadn’t been going particularly well for Emma the past couple of weeks. Being uprooted and planted in a completely new and unfamiliar environment didn’t serve her well. There had already been a few incidents with other students, and she was certain she wasn’t going to set foot in the cafeteria for as long as she could avoid. She didn’t understand how people could be so cruel, then again she didn’t understand much about this place anyhow.
It was dusk. The sun was buried under the horizon, and Emma was glad to finally be able to remove her sunglasses. She placed them gently on top of her head. Her grey eyes scanned the area adjusting to the new light. The brunette blinked a few times before looking down at her shoes. She walked over and took a seat on the grass and slowly moved one of her hands back and forth over a small pile of dirt. A faint smile grew on her face as she saw it sway back and forth with her hand. Okay, maybe it wasn’t all bad.
Vasilisa let out a breath of air as soon as she stepped into the open courtyard of the university. With the sun finally hidden and out, she could feel the moisture of the night budding and her skin tingled in recognition. It had been a while since she visited this place, but the landscape was engraved in her memory still. Ever since she moved out into the city, she and Avalon had taken walks on the beach or in the city instead and her usual trips in the north wing was gone. There wasn't much people around, too, Vas noticed, despite classes having just ended. A couple sat under one of the trees cuddled with each other and three girls giggled in their uniforms while taking a walk back inside the school. Then there was that one other girl...
Taking small leisurely steps in her general direction, Vas noted how she played with the dirt on the ground and a tighter observation made her realize that she wasn’t just playing with it, not with her hands at least.
Hades, maybe? she asked herself regarding the girl’s parentage. If that was so, Vas would usually avoid an encounter given the old misunderstanding Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades had with the territory partitions, but looking at the girl she couldn’t help but think that she might be different, and seemingly out of place. Remembering her experience as a newcomer at the school, Vasilisa quietly approached her and sat on the grass a few feet away.
She let out a sigh before saying, “lovely evening, isn’t it? I’ve always liked night times better than the day. It’s colder.” And then she closed her eyes, waiting for a response from the stranger.

The brunette was completely immersed in what she was doing to notice anything around her. Her mind was completely quiet. During this time she was fully in the moment. Just enjoying the subtle nuances of what she was actually doing with her hands. It had been only about a minute and she could start to feel a headache coming on. They had told her about side effects of over use of her abilities, but she had never thought anything of it, besides, she hadn’t even been doing it for that long.
Emma was fighting the urge to stop, but scared of what might happened if she pushed anymore she finally gave up, letting the small handful of dirt fall back to the ground where it had originated. Emma jumped slightly when she heard a voice not too far from her speaking. The girl had snuck up on her, she must have been so zoned out to even notice. She looked at the seemingly harmless girl and tried to muster up a faint smile. “I-I, suppose, uh, I guess.” She said, voice shaky as usual. She gazed back down to the dirt she had been playing with. “I uh, only mean, uh the night is uh, good. I miss the uh, sun.”

The girl stuttered a lot, Vasilisa noted, and it made her smile a bit. It was rare to find people like her around campus. The typical group were sharp at the tongue and arrogant (if they even go into groups), one of the reasons why Vasilisa chose not to stay in campus anymore or have that many very close friends.
When the girl spoke, Vas opened her eyes to see the darkening skies that still had shades of orange in them from the newly set sun beyond the horizon. It will be dark soon and she would have to head back to the apartment. Until then, she had a few more minutes to kill. "The sun just set and you're missing it already," she pointed out, now turned towards the stranger who was looking down this time. "But you're lucky if that's the case. Sunny California..." she stated as if in irony, "One of the best places to live if you really want the sun." Otherwise, maybe Florida?
Taking into careful consideration of what certain things could come her way if she introduced herself now, Vasilisa partially bit her lip and extended her hand for a shake, 'I'm Vasilisa."

Emma looked at the girl every so often, but never long enough to maintain eye contact. It was odd. She felt so...naked without her glasses on. And although she was tempted to put them back on she knew it would seem weird to do so now, especially with no real need for her to do it. She was accustomed to the looks she would get from wearing them inside all the time, but that never got to her, because she actually needed them then. Now was her only time to free her eyes and now all she wanted to do was hide them again.
She listened as the girl spoke. She regretted instantly what she had said earlier. The girl would only as question and although Emma was fully aware of the fact that everyone here had abilities she never felt comfortable explaining her own. "I-I can never enjoy it anymore." She mumbled quietly more to herself than to the girl. California one of the best places to live if you really want the sun. California the place she had lived her entire life and thoroughly enjoyed the sun everyday. And now, she would never be able to enjoy it in its entirety again, and for that she was heartbroken. Hearing the girl speak about it just made her sadness even more apparent.
The brunette looked warily at the girls extended hand. She reached out slowly and delicately shook it. "I'm Emma." She said with a half smile, she blinked a few times feeling her eyes begin to adjust to the darker atmosphere.

Emma. Pretty name, Vasilisa thought. However, she couldn't help but bite her lip with the girl's quiet and shy demeanor. It was difficult for Vas herself to start up conversations with people, and this time it proved to be a bigger challenge. Looking up at the skies again she let the silence pass between the two of them for a while and thanked the gods that it wasn't very awkward.
Vasilisa could swear that she heard Emma say something back to her regarding the sun. Though she didn't know if she understood it right, somehow with her expression she could connect a few ideas. Maybe she shouldn't have mentioned anything about the sun. But how could she know how Emma feels about the celestial being?
"How come?" she quietly asked, not wanting to offend her any more that she already have. Generally, she was just curious. The way Emma had sounded (and if she was watching her then the way she looked heartbroken), it seemed that she was rid of one of the precious things she enjoyed in life. Then again, if she loved the sun then why the sunglasses perched on top of her head? Vasilisa remembered how she hypothesized her godly parentage simply based on her activity earlier with the ground. Hades. She wondered if she was right and if it connected with her dilemma.

Emma jumped a little at the sound of the girl’s voice. She had hoped the girl hadn’t heard her, but considering the question, she assumed she had. Darn. How could she explain something that she herself fully didn’t even understand? The brunette tend to forget where she was every so often, and this time was no exception.
Emma let out a sigh, frustrated with herself, and the situation. Not with her and Vasilisa, no. The fact that she was here in the first place was more than enough to upset her. She missed Sister Margaret. She missed her kitchen, and all the kids that cycled through. She missed her home. Maybe, Sister Margaret didn’t want her anymore, just like her parents didn’t want her anymore.
Emma fought back tears as she tried to shake the thought. Her grey eyes were focused on the view in front of her, “My eyes are sensitive to the sun now.” She said, voice unsteady. She lowered her head. “Sometimes, uh, sunglasses don’t even help.” She shut her eyes tightly, recalling the first time she felt the pain. It was as though someone had poured boiling water on them. She heard herself screaming, the pain was unbearable. A shiver ran up her spine, she couldn’t look at the girl next to her.

Well that was... a bummer indeed. Vasilisa didn't know what to tell Emma. She didn't even know how to feel about it. Biting her lip, she tried to comprehend how to proceed with the situation. She had brought this one up and it led to a heartbroken girl. One of the many reasons why she shouldn't really attempt to start conversations. She sucked at it.
All she could think about was whether the gods could get any more cruel sometimes. Punishing the wrong people, giving the wrong gifts, maybe even having no regard for how their children feel at times.
They have definitely been cruel this time with Emma.
“My eyes are sensitive to the sun now,” Emma said. “Sometimes sunglasses don’t even help.” And somehow Vas had a suspicion that when she said 'sensitive' it didn't just mean getting blinded by the sun's glare like any normal person would. "Oh," was the only response she could give, and she was ready to hit herself after. "I'm sorry. I didn't... I didn't know." She finished softly. Vasilisa bit her lip once again and decided whether she should just up and leave or stay and console the girl. She couldn't just leave her here though.
The skies were definitely darker now and Vasilisa should be having dinner soon if she really intended to reserve the rest of her night for school work that was due this week. She could still spare a few minutes though, half an hour max, maybe?
"I can control ice," Vasilisa said out of nowhere. "But just like everything else something needed to keep it balanced, so every time I overexert the use of my power it's either I would faint or catch a really high fever. Usually it's both in that order," she laughed lightly at the irony. "I used to think it's unfair because I really love snow and the idea of winter time. I thought it's unfair for someone who loved the idea of the colder element to catch a fever. I think it's a bit ironic, really. But I read in a book once that expecting the world to treat you fairly just because you're a good person would be like expecting the lion not to eat you just because you're a vegetarian. The world isn't very fair sometimes, but we should learn to live with it*, otherwise we'd all be wallowing in the river Acheron forever. Life isn't fair, but sometimes that's all right. Maybe it means that something better is around the corner and whatever you've lost would be replaced by something greater."
She had no idea whether Emma listened to whatever she just ranted, but Vas hoped that the girl did. Maybe it wasn't something that would make Emma feel better, but at least she hoped it would help her someway. Standing up from the grass she brushed her jeans from the dirt and secured her bag on her shoulder. "I don't know about you, but the sun's completely down now and I may be slightly hungry. Want to join me for dinner someplace? You could choose the place." Vasilisa offered with a smiled. *quote isn't mine Emma Rae Forrester

Silence passed between the two of them. It was weird. She enjoyed the girl’s company. Even in the silence they shared. She wasn’t…overbearing. It was a bit refreshing from other encounters she had since she has been here. Emma kept her eyes trained ahead, admiring the view. She heard Vasilisa reply with a simple oh. She hadn’t expected much really. She wouldn’t know what to say, she still doesn’t. “It’s okay.” Was all she offered in return. It wasn’t the girls fault that she could be blinded by the sun, nor there being anyway for her to know. She didn’t fault the girl. If anyone was to blame would be her parents, right? How do you bring a child into this world only to abandon it and curse it with such a thing?
The sky was darker now, and yet Emma could see everything perfectly. It was so crisp, so clear. Just like it had been during the day. Was she to become nocturnal now? That would solve a lot of her problems. Sleep during the day, be awake at night. It would help with people too, there would be fewer people up when she was up. That could work. Maybe she could talk to some of her teachers about that. No more dreaded morning classes. Yeah. That could work.
Emma looked at the girl when she spoke again. Ice? How interesting. She listened intently as the girl rambled on about her power. A faint smile appeared. “You, er,” She bit her lip. “You really think that’s true?” She asked. Was there really something greater heading her way?
For the first time in a long time, and definitely for the first time since she had gotten here (about a week ago) Emma was starting to feel a bit better about her new situation. She watched as the girl stood and asked about getting some food. Great. She recalled the two instances in which result in food being thrown at her in the university cafeteria. “Ummm.” She considered the offer. She felt rude to decline, but at the same time her anxiety grew thinking about it. Maybe it was time to take some risks. “A-are we aloud of campus? Cause, I-I um, really don’t want to go to the dining hall here.”

"Yeah, I believe it's true. If nothing good comes out of what we are then why are we even hiding in this island and being chased by monsters, right?" She smiled. Yes. Why 'protect' them when they weren't important? There has to be something...
Vasilisa waited for the girl's response to her offer. She hoped Emma would join her. It would be good company at least. But based on her hesitations... She didn't want to eat here? That's fine with Vasilisa. She did mention that Emma could choose anyplace she wanted to eat in. "Yeah. We could go somewhere in the city. One of the diners in there. Or if you want a quieter place, my penthouse. I live alone. Well, except for my dog, but it's just him and me there." Vasilisa reached out her hand to help Emma stand with high hopes that the girl would take it. "Up for it?"
