One of the main reasons that she loved her job was the atmosphere that the workplace itself presented. It took her back to a time where, well things she imagined were not simple but perhaps more simpler than they were now. Making her way in through the front, she quickly made her way to the back to finish wrapping her apron around her waist.
Today she had told herself that she was going to have another great day because that was just how she always told herself. She knew that every day at work was not great but she still attempted to always give it her best. Letting out her final deep breath, she made her way out.
Looking around, she took a seat to tie up her laces and surveyed the customers that were already there and not to mention the ones that were coming in.
Once in a while Tyler liked to go into an old timey diner. He liked eating in restaurants sometimes. It wasn't like he couldn't cook. In fact, he enjoyed it sometimes. But today was one of the days he didn't feel like it. He opened the door and smiled as the bell sounded. It wasn't overly busy which was nice. Tyler sat down at one of the tables and suppressed a small yawn, looking around. A waitress tying up her laces, and a few customers.
"Nice and peaceful. And most importantly, no Leclaires."
Jade got up. If she never got started then her shift would never be over. She knew a pretty good amount of people just by faces, not on a personal level. Except for the man that had just walked in. Still she never let that effect her job too much. She got up and put a smile on her face as she made her way over.
"How may I help you today?"
She hoped that he was not a difficult customer but one could never tell. She also always recited the daily specials.
"Maybe a daily special is what you'd like, today it's catfish."
Tyler saw the waitress come over and smiled at her.
"Catfish? Here I thought everyone was true about their online personas." He couldn't help the catfishing joke! He smiled disarmingly.
"Yeah I'm gonna have to turn down the catfish, yummy as it may sound." His voice was full of sarcasm and he followed it with a laugh and a brief sticking out of his tongue. Tyler grinned.
"That being said, I really have no idea what to order. What would you suggest?"
Jade looked around for a minute and then took a seat across from the man.
"For a man like you,"
she was not judging but come on.
"Pot roast, broccoli minus the cheese, and scalloped potatoes. For the sake of whoever blessed you with all that hair order anything to drink but do not put diet in front of it."
He did not look like he belonged here though, not in this diner anyway.
He listened to her suggestion. They had pot roast, broccoli and scalloped potatoes...hmm that sounded pretty good. He nodded.
"That does sound good. Although I would like a little bit of cheese on the broccoli. It's good without of course, but I eat out to treat myself once in a while. Tonight I don't have to cook. Not that that's really a problem of course. As for the drinks, there would be no bloody way I'd drink diet. That stuff rots your brain." He mock shuddered.
"I need all the brain cells I have! Besides, it tastes like crap." He laughed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"A glass of lemonade if you have it would be fantastic...or else just water's fine." He thought about joking about a god-given head of hair, but it'd only be funny to himself so he opted not to make that joke.
"Thanks for the good recommendation. I'm Tyler by the way." What? He made a habit of being friendly. They were all in the same town after all.
she said. Usually she did not exchange her name with customers but he did not seem like a stalker so that was good. Then again one could never truly tell.
Jade. Like the beautiful green stone. Or was it a gem? Tyler didn't know it wasn't like he was a geologist or whatever. When she asked what he did, he pondered how to answer that for a second. It wasn't like he could burst out with 'I kill mythical monsters for a living and protect Corinth City. Although that would be wonderful to say at first, she'd probably think he was totally and certifiably insane.
"I'm a private investigator. Kinda security. That and I'm a university student up at Olympus Falls."
Jade was almost always a positive person it seemed.
"Well luckily at least you seem to always find time to eat. One second."
Skating was an art and while Jade was not bad at it, sometimes she was a little clumsy on the art of it all. So far today while today had not been long at all she was doing well on her skates. Finding his order she brought it over and placed it down in front of him.
"I ALWAYS find time to eat. It would be highly unfortunate if I couldn't find time to eat good food." Tyler smiled. When she asked about the job, he nodded.
"I do like it. Not as many jobs as I'd like, but then that leaves time for university as well. What about you? You like your job?" The roller skates were a nice touch he had to admit.
"Can't be easy keeping your balance. I practice martial arts and I still have trouble on roller skates. Far too many bruises to the tail-bone come my way when I try." He grinned.
"Doesn't stop me from keeping on trying of course."

She plopped down in the seat. Now usually she was good at her job but it seemed like today she was becoming quite lazy. Well not lazy persay but she was doing more talking than normal.
"I absolutely love IT!", she enthused. "I know looking in, it does not look like much but I do love it all the same. No one can ever say that I do not do my best. The truth is a lot of times I go up and over and beyond but that is okay with me. If I do not do it, who else will do it you know?"
Aww she was getting all pumped about her job. Tyler smiled listening to what she was saying. Seeing someone so energetic about something made him feel happier too.
"Hey people look into places or at people and think they're unremarkable all the time. But that doesn't mean they are. People can be wrong a lot of the time." He shrugged.
"If something matters to you, that's truly the difference between it being remarkable or not. In my opinion anyway, things aren't remarkable unless they make someone happy. Or elicit some kind of emotion from someone at least." He rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled at himself.
"It's good you can be happy about the day to day. So am I with my own job even though it isn't much either."
She did not squeal but the pitch of her voice did raise a little bit. Was he a douche? It did not matter since he was not being a douche to her. Some people deserved the douche bag side of people even though she could never see herself being like that but people did change.
'It's different to speak to someone who might actually be on my intellectual level, so ease up, it's a compliment is all.'
